Birling Gap – Sevens Sisters

This post may be a little bit more about a walk and less about food…but walking and eating are two of my most favourite things, and so when the opportunity arises to combine the two, I can’t resist!

The Seven Sisters walk is an iconic cliff top walk along the south cost of England, and is part of the South Downs Way National Trail.  We walked from Seaford to Eastbourne, which is about 23km and takes you up and down 7 hills (called sisters) along the way (there is also a secret 8th hill at the start which isn’t counted as a sister).

In terms of eating options, there are many along the way.  The Cucksmere Inn is the first one you hit, and is set back from the coast.  If you aren’t hungry enough by the time you get there, keep walking until you hit the Birling Gap Tea Rooms which is perfectly situated about afternoon tea time and also has proper toilets which is a massive bonus. There’s also a beach there if you are feeling particularly enthusiastic about swimming…

The Beachy Head is also another great option for a late lunch or drinks if you are taking a packed lunch – it’s at the top of the last sister, so all you have to do once you leave there is roll down the hill into Eastbourne and straight to the train station to head back to Waterloo.

Go here for: if you’re up for a bit of exploring; day trip out of London; stretching the legs

Menu highlights: the scones at The Beachy Head – or the chocolate brownie if you’re a bit of a chocolate fan; the fresh eggs and fruit in the cute van next to The Cucksmere Inn; hot chips and beer at The Beachy Head before the walk down the hill

Top tips: the walk is absolutely stunning on a sunny day so if you can head down there is the weather is looking fab; if you’re not keen for a pub lunch, take a packed lunch so you can feast on the sweet treats at Birling Gap and hot chips and a well earned beer at The Beachy Head; take sunscreen – we got burnt even when it was cloudy!
