The Gun

The Gun was introduced to me a few years ago by an old boss of mine who had been coming here for years and I instantly fell in love with the place.

The Gun has been a public house for over 250 years and narrowly missed permanent closure after a fire in 2001 which kept it closed for 3 years.

Situated in a Grade II listed building down the end of a narrow street, it’s a bit out of the way which I think adds to its charm – it’s got a great vibe and is the ultimate gastropub of the Docklands, with some calling it London’s finest waterside pub.  On this visit we were lucky enough to catch it on the best of days and nabbed a table on the terrace overlooking the Thames, but you can also sit inside in the dining room which, while not facing the river, is light and airy.  To add to that the food is hard to fault and the staff are attentive and friendly…oh and the events team sure know how to put on a good private function.

Go here for: a work lunch if you work in Canary Wharf; lunch on a Sunday if you don’t; pop in for a drink on a sunny day if you’re keen for a bit of an outing

Menu highlights: oysters, pan fried skate knobs, the cod, peanut butter and banana cream pie (in the words of the waiter it is “perfect”)

Top tips: I’ve taken a look at the Christmas set menu and it looks ridiculously good…; if you like The Gun, it’s owned by the ETM group which own a range of pubs across London including the likes of The Botanist and The Jugged Hare; The Gun is a great place for a private function, the terrace looks out over the River Thames and is beaut on a good day (also has heaters for on a not so good day!).  The canapés are ridiculous – the mini beef wellington is one of the best things I’ve ever eaten!
